Jonathan Pfeffer established 'Pfeffer & Co' in February 1970, and from its roots grew a number of legal practices around Greater Manchester. Jonathan Pfeffer's influence when establishing each subsequent office in the network remains as strong today as it was when founded. The Manchester practice traces its history directly to the original Pfeffer & Co, moving from St Ann's Square to Chapel Street in 1980. Paul Wainwright's entry in partnership, and then Terry Kelly, paved the way for the firm to grow in different areas of law. In February 1972 an office was opened in Prestwich, becoming 'Graham Leigh Pfeffer & Co.' in 1983 when Graham Leigh joined the partnership. A practice at Pendlebury followed in 1984, Sheldon Fagelman joining the business in 1990. Worsley was opened as a branch of Pendlebury in January 1993 before being itself being established as an independent legal firm in April 2001. The Bury practice had been located at various addresses until, in 1999, it settled in its five-storey building opposite the transport hub and the famous market in Bury town centre. Neil Sugarman's specialisms in the personal injury and criminal injury field, and the television and radio coverage that it has since generated, put GLP on the national map. Across Manchester, and with Edward Cliiford also adding his expertise as a Partner, the Blackley and Crumpsall offices were opened by Martin Cohen in February 1979 and April 1980. In August 1979, they also expanded towards Middleton opened its doors on the Langley housing estate. David Foster became a Partner in the firm in June 1987 and continues to serve the local community and beyond. Other legal practices in Rochdale, Salford and in and Manchester: Chorlton, Whalley Range, Whitefield, Burnage, Ladybarn, and Moss Side have variously merged, become independent as existing partners or managing solicitors acquired their offices, or closed. The advertising campaign of "If you can't say 'Pfeffer', ask for 'Leigh'" ran successfully in the 1990s, but by then many of the offices were known simply as 'GLP' through Graham Leigh's use of the initials as the dominant feature in the 'Graham Leigh Pfeffer & Co' advertising and high street presence. 'GLP' became the key marketing identity in 2004 when all the associated firms used 'GLP Solicitors' as their principal trading name. |
