The excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was overshadowed by a concerning rise in domestic violence incidents across the UK. According to the UK Football Policing Unit, 384 domestic violence incidents were reported during the tournament, the highest number recorded for a men’s major football tournament. These incidents accounted for 17% of the 2,322 football-related incidents reported, with 93% occurring around England matches.

While football itself does not cause domestic abuse, research has consistently shown that major tournaments can coincide with increased incidents. Experts believe factors such as heightened emotions, alcohol consumption and existing abusive behaviour can contribute to this rise. Support organisations continue to remind the public that there is never an excuse for domestic abuse, regardless of the result on the pitch.
